Ear Cuffs Go Oversize

When I saw this photo of Aussie actress and model Lara Bingle taken at an event in Melbourne this week, I fell in love and immediately went hunting for some oversized, glitzy ear cuffs such as this beautiful one. I already have my regular size, silver daisy-chain ear cuff for those days where I'm feeling quirky, but I am so coveting one of these!! Statement jewellery has always been a reoccuring trend for the arriving party season, with 'the bigger the better' being a renowned rule for creating maximum glamour, but the oversize ear cuff is a unique and edgy alternative to that luxury necklace or those chandelier earrings. Lara emphasised just how impactful the ear cuff can be, by ditching all her other jewellery in favour of this one spiked, diamante beauty. The simple Camilla and Marc black jumpsuit she wore with the cuff could have looked plain, yet this one piece of jewellery transforms the whole look. I love its slight futuristic feel and it is striking next to her bronzed face, cherry red lipstick and her neat, laidback bun.
Lara is not the only star rocking the new way to wear earrings- earlier this year I posted this picture of Diane Kruger with her amazing cuff that gives the illusion of four piercings. At the Chanel Haute Couture Fall 2012 show in February, she completed her unmistakably Parisian look (remember that full-skirted Chanel Resort '13 denim dress and baker-boy cap) with another eye-catching ear cuff. (This one was a real sparkler!)

The sudden craze for these statement, ornate ear pieces has definitely been somewhat influenced by the catwalk; with Rodarte's Spring 2013 models sporting medieval-style cuffs in the shape of serpents whose coils swirled up from earlobes to tips. Fresh New York designer, Katie Gallagher's SS13 collection “Everything Forever” saw models accessorized with enormous cuffs in pewter coloured, neo gothic designs. They are that huge they almost look like hair accessories!

Sienna Miller and Mary Kate Olsen are two more avid fans of ear cuffs; each opting for dainty leaf designs. Get the nature-loving look with this gorgeous Silver Leaf-Shape Ear Cuff from cute and kitsch jewellery site Chelsea Doll. They have several ear cuffs available, from fiery dragon designs to pretty pearl-drop and angel-wing pieces.

If you're going for ultimate glam factor, with Lara as your cuff-inspiration, then this Stone Daisy Ear Cuff with Swarovski Stones from ASOS is a little more expensive at £40, but would look incredible on and would save you buying any other outfit accessories. Its cluster of dazzling emerald and turquoise gemstones would definitely do all the talking. For all you bijoux-obsessors this would be a ridiculously beautiful addition to your jewellery box.

Two hippier options now- this Silver Wing Cuff by RingsandTings.com (£4.50) has a really funky vibe, emphasised by the awesome eye-makeup of the model, and it comes in gold too. And this Feather Ear Cuff selling at ISWAI.co.uk (£21.99) is another stand-out piece. The slightier heftier price tag is worth every penny, as the cuff was a collaborative design with jewellery designer to the stars, Zara Taylor- Olivia Palermo is a fan! In case you hadn't already discovered it, ISWAI is a fab fashion site dedicated to young and developing designers and self-expression, and it was founded by none other than Made In Chelsea's Caggie Dunlop. As well as featuring a really interesting blog, it sells hipster-chic tees and vests as well as more intricate ear pieces and one-off crystal pendants. Definitely check it out, though I may do a write-up on the site and its lovely products soon!

If you want to experiment with a larger than usual ear cuff but would rather stick to a more classic design then try this pretty Cream Ornate Ear Cuff by Miss Selfridge for £10. It is big enough to be spotted, yet its little pearls are delicate enough to be worn with an everyday outfit.

I absolutely adore the ear cuff as an accessory, especially now jewellery designers have amped up the glam to offer these dazzling creations. They are totally chic yet adventurous at the same time. There are so many different styles so you can find one that is just the right size and impact for you. Try eBay as another place to search- you can find a whole variety of daring or just pretty cuffs there. I am now going to try and gather together as many as I can for an early Christmas wishlist! Think how apt a sparkling one would be for those festive parties!
